Prime Minister Rishi Sunak
The Conservative Party contracted me to document Prime Minister Rishi Sunak during a constituency and regional meet-and-greet tour through southern England on January 19, 2024. The assignment covered approximately five stops across the day, with images required for print media running later that evening and early the next morning.
Working as the sole photographer meant managing all coverage independently while coordinating with Sunak's press team and a videographer. The tight security protocols surrounding a sitting Prime Minister created immediate access restrictions. Media positioning gets determined by protection officers, not photographic considerations. You work within the parameters set for you.
The brief required capturing both formal political moments and authentic constituent interactions. Print media needed images showing Sunak as an accessible political figure connecting with voters, not just delivering prepared remarks. This meant anticipating candid moments between official photo opportunities while respecting the security perimeter.
Rapid location changes presented the main logistical challenge. Five stops across a day leaves little margin for technical issues or missed moments. Each venue required a quick assessment of available light, crowd positioning, and potential angles before Sunak arrived. You get one chance at each location.
Outdoor winter lighting in January created technical complications. Short daylight hours and overcast conditions meant working at higher ISOs to maintain shutter speeds fast enough for candid interaction shots. Mixed lighting between outdoor arrivals and indoor venues required constant white balance adjustments to maintain consistent image quality across the set.
Crowd management affected shot selection throughout the day. Public meet-and-greets attract supporters, protesters, and curious onlookers. Framing shots that showed genuine constituent engagement while avoiding distracting background elements required continuous repositioning. The press team facilitated access where security protocols allowed, but ultimate positioning remained subject to protection officer approval.
The print deadline drove the entire workflow. Images needed to be transmitted immediately after each stop to meet evening newspaper deadlines. This meant culling and processing shots in transit between locations rather than at the end of the day. Mobile editing capabilities and reliable cellular connection became as critical as camera equipment.
The delivered images gave the Conservative Party assets for multiple print outlets covering the tour. Morning newspapers ran images showing Sunak engaging with voters across different southern England communities, supporting the campaign narrative of an accessible Prime Minister connected to constituents beyond Westminster.
The combination of security restrictions, a tight timeline, changing locations, and an immediate deadline set this assignment apart from standard political photography. Success required technical flexibility, security protocol compliance, and the ability to identify authentic moments within heavily managed media access.
