Bits & Pretzels, the Munich founders festival known for pairing Silicon Valley-calibre speakers with a distinctly Bavarian dress code, booked full coverage of its 2019 edition at Messe München. Reid Hoffman, co-founder of LinkedIn, opened the day in a fireside chat, but the session the entire festival was built around came later: President Barack Obama's headline appearance, his first major address at a European tech conference since leaving office.

The scale of the audience was itself a subject. Thousands of founders, many in lederhosen and dirndls per the festival's own tradition, filled the hall for the opening sessions, and the crowd's energy built through the day toward Obama's appearance, culminating in a sea of raised phone flashlights across the hall as anticipation peaked before he walked on stage.

Security around a former US president meant working within a tightly controlled perimeter: restricted backstage access, a protection detail managing movement in the wings, and stage positioning dictated by security rather than by the best angle. Coverage had to be built around those constraints rather than against them, working the edges of what access allowed to get both the wide, atmospheric shots of the room and the tight, expressive frames of Obama himself.

The pressure that defined the assignment came after the session ended, not during it. Images from Obama's appearance needed to be culled, edited, and distributed as fast as possible, faster than a typical conference turnaround, with organisers and press contacts waiting on the file the moment he left the stage. That meant working through the edit in real time between shots rather than after the session wrapped, prioritising the images that told the story of the moment over a fully worked set.
